La Ciudad

Una ciudad que no termina de construirse ni de derrumbarse.

Lo primero que golpea es el contraste: el skyline emerge en negro carbón y grafito, denso, casi violento en su gestualidad, mientras el agua abajo lo sostiene en un azul eléctrico que pertenece a otro mundo. Un mundo que todavía cree en algo. La ciudad no cree. La ciudad solo existe.

Rogelio Garcia pinta aquí lo que nadie quiere ver de frente: la metrópolis contemporánea como organismo en colapso permanente. Las grúas de construcción en el extremo izquierdo están apenas esbozadas, casi fantasmales — como si el dibujo técnico no alcanzara para describir lo que se construye. Los edificios, en cambio, están pintados con toda la urgencia del óleo expresionista: inclinados, fragmentados, llenos de destellos de color que se filtran por las grietas — verde, rojo, azul, ocre — como si la vida insistiera en aparecer exactamente donde la arquitectura falla.

El agua no refleja la ciudad. La contradice. Su azul vibrante y ondulante es la única cosa viva en la composición, el único elemento que se mueve por voluntad propia, que no obedece a ningún plano urbanístico.

La Ciudad no es un paisaje. Es un diagnóstico.

Y como todo diagnóstico honesto, es incómodo y necesario.

A city that never finishes being built — nor collapses entirely.
The first thing that hits is the contrast: the skyline emerges in carbon black and graphite, dense, almost violent in its gesturality, while the water below holds it in an electric blue that belongs to another world. A world that still believes in something. The city doesn’t believe. The city simply exists.
Rogelio García paints here what no one wants to face directly: the contemporary metropolis as an organism in permanent collapse. The construction cranes on the far left are barely sketched — almost ghostly — as if technical drawing couldn’t quite describe what is being built. The buildings, in contrast, are painted with all the urgency of expressionist oil: tilted, fragmented, full of color flashes filtering through the cracks — green, red, blue, ochre — as if life insisted on appearing exactly where architecture fails.
The water does not reflect the city. It contradicts it. Its vibrant, undulating blue is the only living thing in the composition, the only element that moves of its own will, that obeys no urban plan.
La Ciudad is not a landscape. It is a diagnosis.
And like every honest diagnosis, it is uncomfortable and necessary.
